What new countries should start a Big Brother?
« on: October 22, 2011, 07:40:20 PM »
I was thinking today about what countries should start their own big brother shows :D

The major european one I thought of was Ireland , I know they often have contestants in the uk version but it would be cool if they had their own show , maybe in the Irish language to make it different from the Uk version

Maybe New Zealand as well , or some of the Asian countries such as South Korea or Japan, Or maybe the Baltic countries should do a joint version :D

What do people think?

An Arab world big brother would be very interesting , I wonder would it not be too controversial though?

They canceled the first season in 2002... Too controversial :) but I read in this forum that a new season of a Arab BB, will start in April.  ;)

To my knowledge there isn't any BB Arab starting in April or anytime.

The best chance would be for 1 country to take a chance with it - like say Lebanon - and if successful, other countries could join in for future seasons.

But I can't see BB ever returning to the region, the failed atempt in 2002 has permanently damaged the brand, unless they launched under the Secret Story branding.

Big Brother Asia! Probably hosted in Hong Kong. I don't want Malaysia or Singapore to host BB Asia since they have problems with freedom and free speech in those countries. Malaysia also have a lot of issues with religious freedom and racial equality. If BB Asia will be hosted in these countries, the show may be censored heavily. The Philippines will unlikely to host BB Asia as it is geographically, politically, and culturally distant from the rest of Asia. South Korea and Japan may have a difficulty handling language barrier. Although it would be crazy to have a Japanese version of BB. South Korea can plagiarize Japan BB anytime :)

New Zealand definately top of that list - and thought it might get a series once BB Australia was dropped.   Perhaps with it now revived and countries using other countries houses becoming increasingly common there might be a slim chance of it now happening.

Japan is always one that I am surprised has not had it's own Big Brother. I'd love to see a BB Iceland, as I love the country. Turkey, I'm quite surprised the country hasn't had a BB already, but then I'm reminded of that horrible time when those women were kept in a house and secretly filmed for a porn site, believing themselves to be in BB Turkey.

A Scottish, Welsh or Irish Big Brother would be interesting to see because I'm sure people here in England would complain that they have to have BB UK, not BB England :P. It's like the problems with devolved government, but with reality tv!

Small countries such as San Marino or Moldova would be a laugh, simply because of the tiny amount of population those countries have.

I'm currently thinking about how amazingly boring a Big Brother in Vatican City would be! No women, no talk of sex, no chance of being ejected for physical violence. Yawn! :P

Then you probably never watch shows like Borgia lol

I think New Zealand is a must at this point. I don't understand why they never did it.

It's like saying that Scotland, England, Wales and NI all should have their own individual BB despite being a whole country altogether

Ireland should though

With a population of 300,000 Iceland is probably too small for Big Brother.

If the recent edition in Lithuania was a success, then I think their neighbours Estonia and Latvia could be contenders for the next new countries.

Albania is 3.2 millions and New Zealand is 4.4 millions. Plus they had very successful reality show already.

Then I guess NZ should do BB! I didn't even know Albania has such a small population.

Are NZ and Australia connected at all?

Maybe they could do a joint edition.

Out of curiosity do NZ and Australia have a feud? Like Scotland and England do?

No feud, they're close. The relation between the two countries are often referred as "siblings" relation, still both countries have their own culture. I guess it wouldn't make sense to have a 4.5 millions country joining a 35 million country though.

I think Austria should do a BB season by its own, because I know people from Austria could watch the german BB.

when BB Germany startet, I remember they did some reality show in Austria which was considered the "austrian equivalent to BB" due to the heavy success at the same time: The show was called Taxi Orange and it was almost like The Real World but mixed with a competitive aspect. They were hosting a cap buisness but it was live with evictions and such. It had a low in 2001 just like the german BB had. After BB Germany came back (which was somehow a surprise) Austria problaby never considered to do their own season anymore because BB DE never came back to old form after that. Right now, I don't think the possibility of AT having their own season is too high, however - you never now. It depends if a private channel feels like they have enough money to invest in a programme that is nearly 15 years old. btw imagine - when André was born BB was already almost one year on air - how scary is THAT?!
