Post by: BBDR16 on November 23, 2016, 12:21:29 PM
Hello, Forum folks! It's almost 2017 and we haven't started this discussion topic yet LOL.

CYPRUS was the first country to announce it's representative for ESC 2017. It's former X Factor contestant HOVIG, who finished 7th in his season back in 2009 (if I'm correct). His song has not been revealed yet, and Swedish composer and ESC tycoon Thomas G:son is behind his entry.

This is the song he presented for the 2015 NF, titled "Stone in a River" that finished in 4th place.

NETHERLANDS was the 2nd country to announce their act for 2017, and after being rumored to go since winning The Voice in 2014... 3-piece girl group O'G3NE were confirmed on October 2016 as the next act to fly the Dutch flag in Eurovision. Days later they released their first album called "We Got This" and became #1 in the country in its first week. Their entry will be revealed in the coming months.

Here's their rendition of Loreen's iconic "Euphoria" from this summer:

Over the past few days, 2 more acts were announced:

On Friday 16 December, IRELAND, with the help of iconic Louis Walsh, selected 20-year-old BRENDAN MURRAY to be their singer. Following the announcement, made on RTE's The Late Late Show (where their NF used to be held), Mr. Walsh stated that they were looking for songs alas Sam Smith, Ed Sheeran for Brendan to sing in Kiev next May.

Here's when Nathan is properly and formally introduced to the Irish public as their next representative:

Then on Monday 19 December, AUSTRIA's ORF announced that they've selected internally aspiring R&B singer NATHAN TRENT. Trent, 24, was originally set to take part of Germany's NF, Unser Song 2017, as he was one of the 33 shortlisted singers to take part in the competition.

I don't really have a top at the moment. I love Norma John...but I really love the entries of Italy and France at the moment. Sweden is not bad, but IMHO it's not the best they had.

Bookies really seems to like the Portuguese entry. A bit dull, but would like to see Portugal in the final.

OK...if I really have to...I can give you my TOP 3:

1. Italy
2. Belgium
3. France

BTW...If you didn't already know, in Melodifestivalen final both Lisa Ajax and Robin Bengtsson had the word fuck in their songs before the final. Lisa chose not to drop that word in the final, possibly to get more votes. That failed miserably. Robin replaced the original with freaking.

I didn't really see any reason to sugarcoat the original word used in either song. It is as it is.

I honestly can't understand why people love the portuguese entry, it's nothing that really stands out or is a masterpiece, I find it boring tbh. But still it's been growing on me so maybe I'll eventually like it lol.

Talking about Finland, I was not feeling it at first but now I find it good, just not between the bests. I honestly think that at this point Italy is just being so overrated, I mean the song is good and I enjoyed it a lot but after some time it lost part of what made it fun, idk.

Talking about masterpieces, my top 3 will probably always remain like this:

1. Macedonia - I was really surprised when Macedonia dropped their song, I was guessing for some another cheap ballad and tables turned so fast the second I hear this song. IT'S A FUCKING MASTERPIECE: modern and lately I've been into more intense beats and this gives me everything honestly. The lyrics are super catchy and I love the music video, I like literally everything about this entry, best macedonian entry ever <3333

2. Belgium - This country has been slaying for the last 2 years and I was expecting another slay. But it was MORE than that, this totally BLEW MY MIND. By its Lana Del Rey vibes Blanche is giving me that masterpiece with her beautiful low voice and that amazing instrumental that makes everything so exciting. I cannot see how someone can even dislike this, it's just pure art honestly

3. Poland - Dear Poland, I was not expecting this from you. The song catched my attention from the first second: since I watched the music video first, it gave me a misterious and dark vibe and I was totally down for that. The instrumental is really good and I love how the song keeps growing until it ends. Everytime I listen to this it makes me speechless and makes me wanna scream the lyrics so bad

Believe it or not, France was my NUMBER 1 like 2 weeks ago, but it all came down to the moment of truth: how would the revamp affect the song? It did, for worse. The original version was so beautiful and those instrumentals ran up perfectly with the French amazing lyrics (I don't speak french but it sounds amazing!!). At the revamp the chorus changed into English, and I was actually okay with that. My issue that made me disappointed by the revamp was the instrumentals: they wanted to give more spice to it but they just finished ruining the whole song. Now it sounds a mix of several sounds thrown there and it makes the experience with the song bad.

IMHO Finland was robbed. Belgium has a great song, but singing was really bad. And Belgium is in the final. Also Czech Republic in my opinion was much better than Belgium. But even without Finland in the final I will enjoy it.

I like Finland's song but i really dislike the singer's tone to be honest, I just don't like listening to her voice. I still think they should have qualified over Australia cause that one note was just too WRONG and yall know which one i'm talking about lol

It's always a matter of taste. I understand, why some people don't like Blackbird for the atmosphere or singer's voice. And while this was a huge disappointment for me, the world didn't end. Life goes on and better luck next year.

Semifinal 1 is the worst because of the huge amount of ballads while the Semifinal 2 is much better for me.

So happy to see Finland out, sorry but I don't like the song, it's cute and beautiful but not for me in ESC. Australia's entry is the worst ever sent in ESC and it didn't deserve to pass while Latvia or Iceland deserved it much more. :(

Really, you don't have anything to be sorry about if you didn't and don't like Finland's entry. Maybe my expectations just were too high. And not in touch with reality. Everyone still has the right to have their own opinion, even if they are different than mine.

Also, Finland was never going to win anyway. Would've been nice to be in the final, but really it would've probably been just a consolation prize.

Congrats to the countries, that did qualify. And Sweden seems to qualify even if they don't send their best. As is the case this year. At least in my opinion.

Well it was obvious Sweden was going to qualify as it was something different among so many balads in the first semifinal.

Portugal is reaching the first place in the betting odds, if Italy doesn't win on Saturday, Portugal will do it. :D

I think Italy will still win but it's true that his performance lacked something, felt much flatter than his San Remo's performance. While Salvador's performance was felt by many people as magical moment. Plus everybody loves a underdog.

I don't see anybody from SF2 emerging as a frontrunner, nor do I think UK or France can deliver something good enough to reach top 3 so it's def between Portugal and Italy. Part of me want Portugal to win for the glory, the other part of me (the rational one) knows Italy would deliver a much better show...
Title: Re: Eurovision Song Contest 2017 - Kiev, Ukraine
Post by: André on May 12, 2017, 01:49:07 AM
Passing by just to say I'm completely shocked and devastated with semi finals lol. I have so much faith in Salvador, although I hated our song at first I think now I see how emotional and good that performance was, and I'm literally so excited to see Portugal doing really well!

Also semi finals killed part of my favorites, I mean... FYR Macedonia (my fave, still hearbroken about it but at least Jana got engaged <3333), FINLAND (I was literally so shocked it didn't make it through), LATVIA, SWITZERLAND, even Estonia.

Serbia would also be part of that list but that performance and vocals... Huuuuuge letdown after being one of my favorites from studio versions. Belgium also, what a letdown I had with Blanche paralyzed at the middle of the stage.

At this point I already hate Italy's song so I'm PRAYING that somehow Portugal pulls a win (still seems surreal to me) or if not us Bulgaria, that kid killed it! Overall I'm satisfied with the qualifiers.

Also, HOW THE FUCK DID CROATIA QUALIFY AGAIN?

I'm also devastated about Macedonia and Switzerland, really, I never felt this way ever with a non qualification in previous years. I mean, Macedonia had their best entry ever and I'm pretty sure they should withdraw because they will never get through the Final again.

I suppose that Switzerland's staging killed all their chances, I want to know why they changed their staging? It was pretty good the one from the national final :(

I feel sad also for Estonia and Serbia.  I still don't get how in hell is Croatia and Belarus in the Final, how?????

Well, now I'm rooting for Israel, Italy and UK to win.

Post by: DanielA on May 12, 2017, 08:48:15 PM
For a second year i've heard completely all songs in this contest.
It's my modest opinion. I am pissed off from "twin songs" in this world. It seems that not only in this contest but generally in the world the limit of original songs is reached. About this contest only Hungary has a real image of Eurovision song in it's pure form – song which represent its country by language, culture and with music with traditional motives. I guess it was the idea of Eurovision in the beginning, in other case the contest will be called "Englishvision" and only english speaking countries with their same music style and tradition will participate in this. Portugal is also close to this but (forgive me Andre :-X) i don't get WHAT THE HELL IS DOING so boring and faceless song in this contest. It was equal to prank for me that it passed and i know that it will be among the first places. I can't even listen it more than maximum 1 minute, it is pure torture to my ears. And no comment for the singer, only if he really has mental problems will recieve my sympathy in other case he is just disgusting but this is song contest after all and i will keep my personal opinion for the singers in this contest. Sweden...catchy but enought with the twin songs as i said. France is the same – boring, boring, faceless, i can't even recognize it among thousand other songs from France which i've heard in my life. Australia – same old story. I guess if it was depending on me there will be no winner. I know that i am too exacting. I am biased toward Bulgaria and Israel of course, it's not a secret. Imri was not so good on live, while Kristian was briliant. The both songs are good. And why not "Beautiful mess" to win? Ater the stupid political song about hate which won last year, why not a song related to the current situation in the world with all the troubles and terrrorism and about love to not take the first place? But no way...Eurovision is not really a song contest since many years so i should expect some same old boring story with a "famous country". And it probably will be Italy, this amazingly dumb song.

If i had to do an ideal ranking it'd be :

1. France
2. Portugal

3. Belgium
4. UK
5. Netherlands
6. Italy

7. Sweden
8. Denmark
9. Moldova
10. Azerbaijan
11. Armenia
12. Israel
13. Poland
14. Belarus
15. Norway
16. Romania

17. Spain
18. Cyprus
19. Greece
20. Australia
21. Austria
22. Germany
23. Hungary
24. Ukraine
25. Croatia
26. Bulgaria

Some thoughts :

- I know not too many people are into Alma's song/performance but tbh i just find the whole thing mesmerizing. It's by far the most dramatic performance without being a ballad or OTT (looking at you Poland) and it gives me LIFE.
- Portugal is magical and he's too precious, i want to protect him.
- Belgium just has the best song this year, not a winning performance sadly
- UK has the best staging for that song, it just merge perfectly it's the work of a genius
- Netherland deserves the world for those vocals and harmonies. Im bald anytime they sing.
- Italy still has a great song but the performance and overselling brought it back to a meh to me.
- the rest is either dated, predictable, boring or plain bad to me.
- And yes i hate on a kid, fight me.

I was honestly surprised, that both Norway and Denmark got to the final from the 2nd semi. Though I really shoudn't be. For me the 2nd semi wasn't anything special over all.

I'm not really sure, who I will be rooting for. I'm still very nervous about Belgium. I still very much like the song, but if Blanche's performance doesn't improve it's bad.

As a Finn I felt a bit surreal, when Finland won. André, do you feel like this didn't just happen?

Jury in Finland gave 12 points to Sweden. Public gave the 12 to Portugal.

I feel like I'm dreaming still, can you believe one of my biggest dreams just happened??? Never in a million years I would say Portugal would ever win, I even had doubts if we would ever make it to the final again. Everything is magical, I just can't believe my country won Eurovision with a new record

And I'm not going to miss this opportunity, Lisbon 2018 I'm going to watch it freaking live!! :o ;D

Yeah. Finland won 11 years ago, and I still can't fully believe it. Sadly I couldn't go see it live in Helsinki. Lucky for me I'll still probably get at least 1 chance to do that thanks to Sweden. I did however go to the big party that was arranged in Helsinki. The square was packed. I think there were about 10.000 people or maybe even more. For Finland that's a lot. And even president Tarja Halonen made an appearance. I'll never forget that gig.

I'm also very happy, that Portugal won with a very simple and beautiful song (albeit still being a bit boring IMHO) and not with some gimmicky performance. In my opinion Finland didn't really deserve to win when we did. But I'm still happy, that my country won ESC. And also Finland had the record in points until Alexander Rybak broke that record for Norway.

Post-contest, and is bad news...

Dutch trio O'G3NE announced earlier this Wednesday, July 12, 2017, that their mother Isolde passed away from a rare form of bone cancer at the age of 47.
