2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics
« on: February 08, 2010, 10:39:02 PM »
So, we are on the eve of another winter olympic games coming our way!  They start this Friday night in Vancouver, BC Canada!  I thought this would be a good place to talk about the games with being we have members from all over the globe, and we all will be watching together!

I love the Olympics & cant wait for them to get underway!  They are such a momentous occasion being held every 4 years (winter & summer sperate) and it is one of those things that can bring the whole world together, which is rare!

Anyone else excited for the games to get underway?

I'm a huge fan of the Summer Olympics, but not the Winter Olympics as in Uruguay we don't have any of this sports and I think we never have a representate at the Winter Olympics.

But for sure I'm going to watch the openning night and maybe some sports like Ice Hocky which I do like  :P

Here in the UK there isn't the same buzz about the Winter Olympics as there is the Summer ones. Mainly because we are pretty useless at winter sports so I probably won't be watching much of it.

Even though I find I'm more entertained by the summer games, I do watch some sports from the winter games as every once in awhile we're able to come up with a good Hockey team here in the US. Though, I'd be willing  to bet that probably a 1/3 of our winter Olympians are some form of Scandinavian.

Though i love both summer & winter games, i tend to like the winter ones a bit more i think.  that could be the cold blooded minnesotan coming out in me, i grew up around & sometimes actually doing most of the sports you see in the winter games, so its only natural i am drawn to them.  But i think its just the unity aspect and the "best of the best" mentality that i love the most.  8)

Love the Summer Olympics, but I never cared too much about the Winters. That's probably because the only chances the Dutch have is with ice skating and ice skating is always on the television, olympics or not.

Not us, we're just good at speedskating. About 95% of our winter medals are in that sport. :P

You guys KILL in Luge/Bobsled!!!  Seems you are pretty good in Cros Country type events as well.  Germany is actually in the lead with 9 medals after Day 5, USA in a close second with 8!!!

Loving these Olympics so far, anyone else following them closely?

I've watched almost everyday the Olympics, but only 1 sport per day. The other day I watched the Figure Skating, the Chinese were amazing!!! but I love the French ones, they were really good.

Yesterday I watched the female Speed Skating. The last race between the German and the Japanese was soooo close LOL, I was rooting for the German

The worst thing about the Olympics in Vancouver, is the different time zone, almost all the sports are after 12 am  :(

By the way, our German was running against a Korean. ;)

Shame, that we weren't that successful in Women's Luge this time after 2 sweeps in SLC and Torino.

Tonight, Women's Downhill, Vonn v Riesch, will be the main highlight for the US and German audience (as it coming live in German prime time)

Is anyone else here keeping track of Olympic hockey? I'm watching it to see if the US will win. Initially I didn't think they could but ever since they beat Canada I 've been thinking they may have a chance. I would also like to see a non-favorite win like say the Czech Republic.

Im following, and Czech Republic is out now, as is Russia.  Its down to the semis with USA vs Finland & Canda vs Slovakia....both USA & Canada are favorites, could you imagine if they both won & faced off in the gold medal match in Canada after USA beat Canada 1 week prior???  That is the stuff Olympic legends are made of!  Im hoping for it!!! (though i think Canada would win this time around)

I wouldn't put it past Slovakia to beat both Canada and the US. I say this because for such a small country they have a very impressive team in both hockey and several other sports and with their placing in both the mens and womens biathlons and skiing events, I wouldn't be shocked if they pulled out a surprise win. On the other hand, I don't think Finland really has a chance, I mean they just barely beat the Czech Republic and don't seem quite up to par with the US team.
