Feels weird to see that such an old ass twist is still being done somewhere in the world as if it's new. And i don't know any fan that actually like this twist.

IDK about Britain, but casting calls don't always correspond with that the season will be. They may or may not use pairs, at least that's how it is in the USA's shows.
